The Day Seattle Died remembering #LayneStaley & #KurtCobain

As many of you know, I am a die hard Alice in Chains fan, I was raised on the sounds of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. School days were filled with poetic lyrics echoing in my head as i scribbled out poems and stories of teen angst... the music is as much a part of my soul as any novels I've read and fallen in love with.

"Where words fail, music speaks."-Hans Christian Anderson

Layne Staley
August 22, 1967 – April 5, 2002

What was it about this man that spoke to my soul? The pain and sadness in his voice as he sang these lyrics, to this day bring tears to my eyes.

"Forgot my woman, lost my

Friends

Things I'd done and where

I've been
Sleep in sweat the mirrors
Cold
See my face it's growin'
Old
Scared to death no reason
Why
Do whatever to get me by
Think about the things I
Said
Read the page it's cold
And dead
Take me home"
Don't Follow, Alice in Chians

Kurt Cobain
February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994

To search Kurt Cobain in an image search is to look into the deep, soulful eyes of a man who spoke to a generation of people. It's said that the eyes are the window to the soul and I believe that is true. This man was loved by millions, but most of them never really knew him, never really understood him. I am grateful that this great man, this poet, that touched the hearts of an entire generation lived, and that his words live on not only in music but also in his published journals.

“I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.”

-Kurt Cobain

Check out these incredible songs about Kurt Cobain
About A Boy, by Patti Smith

My favorite:
Sleeps With Angels, by Neil Young

I can't make this blog post very long. I won't go on and on about my love for these two men, because I feel like it takes away from the importance of this day, and what was lost not only in the city of Seattle, but to an entire generation on these rainy April days... 8 years apart to the day. They may be gone in body, but through their music they live on forever.

"She wasn't perfect
She had some trips of her own
He wasn't worried
At least he wasn't alone
Too late
He sleeps with angels
Too soon
He's always on someone's mind
He sleeps with angels
Too late
He sleeps with angels
Too soon
She was a teen queen
She saw the dark side of life
She made things happen
But when he did it that night
She ran up phone bills
She moved around
from town to town
Too late
He sleeps with angels
Too soon
He's always on someone's mind
He sleeps with angels
He sleeps with angels"
- Sleeps With Angels, Neil Young

  1. I am right there with you when I listen to Layne sing. Layne and Kurt were our voice of the nineties! I am happy I got to see AIC with Layne!

    1. Definitely! They saved music, kept it alive in the midst of the pop craze of the 90s!
